The history of Wheatley Heights
The Concerned Taxpayers of Wheatley Heights/Dix Hills, Inc. has championed the cause of our community for more than 40 years. We were originally known as the Concerned Parents of Wheatley Heights, when neighbors joined together to save Taukomas Elementary School from closing. We were not successful because we were not incorporated. We found ourselves involved in many quality of life issues, from poor street lighting to racial steering by real estate agencies. These concerted, organized efforts created a lasting network of caring friends and concerned, tax paying citizens. Those previously uninvolved became involved.
Together, people in our community express the needs of the neighborhood.
Organization Achievements
+Successfully negotiated with Babylon Town Supervisor
To include in the Schaffer/Brown resolution a ban on Pinelawn Cemetery’s sand mining in our community. Later stopped sand mining at Camp Kaufman. (Have consistently received the cooperation and support of every town administration since 1980).
+Won formal political recognition of Wheatley Heights as a distinct community
As reflected on commercial maps. Long Island Expressway signs identifying Wheatley Heights were erected (1992) due to our targeted efforts.
+Currently expanding efforts and joining other local civic Association
As watchdogs for Republic Airport, focusing on noise abatement, flight patterns, and limiting expansion.
+Established a Wheatley Heights Beautification Program
Which has achieved numerous successes:
1.Flagpole/American Flag, landscape “town square” across from the Wade’s Farm.
2.Sump cleanups.
3.Sidewalk repairs.
4.Upgrade and physical maintenance of Herman Griem Park.

6.Removal of abandoned cars and much more
+Instituted a Neighborhood Watch Program
Succeeded in numerous meetings with Police Department to encourage added police protection, more frequent patrols, improved 911 response, and better intervention with local illegal drug dealings. Also won night security patrols for Herman Griem Park and Kevin Ver Pault Park.
Continuing to work closely with the Half Hollow Hills School District on community-impacting issues.
